"How to remove rust on vinyl siding"

An ongoing discussion beginning back in 2004 ...

Q. Wanting to become rust stains off my chimney that the metal is started to run rust down the side of the firm in the front. I heard that manatic ^muriatic acrid will; is that true and will I need to get a professional to practise the work or volition that work with but a hose spraying it off... I have a low-cal beige vinyl siding. Give thanks you lot.

A. Should I read here, Hydrochloric acid [affil. link to info/product on Amazon] (hydrochloric acrid) instead of manatic acid? This will work most likely, as might citric acid. You would desire to be careful your siding is non damaged, and so might desire to endeavor a pocket-size spot start. Rust is basically iron oxide, and that is attacked by a number of acids. The play a joke on is to find the simplest and safest 1 that is effective and that does not attack the siding. I would try citric acid first, and then hydrochloric, though the latter is probable much easier to work with! Rubber Rubber Gloves [affil. link to info/product on Amazon], and avoiding the fumes, etc., are in gild.

A. An easy and safe mode to get rid of "rust" stains on vinyl siding is to use "Lime-A-Mode [affil. link to info/production on Amazon]" cleaner. I worked as a maintenance man for a local mobile dwelling house sales visitor and i of my responsibilities was to pressure level launder the houses and keep the rust stains off. All of the houses used vinyl siding. For regular cleaning, employ a diluted solution of chlorine bleach and water (about one in 10 parts). Bleach is a surface tension inhibitor (lubricant). Any built up dirt will run off of the vinyl siding within 2 to 3 minutes, then just spray fresh water on the siding. The rust stains are not real rust, merely lime deposits. I spray the deposits with Lime Away and the deposits volition dissolve within ane or 2 days.

Ed. note: You're experienced at information technology, Raymond, and if it works, it works. Merely nosotros cannot agree with you that the dark-brown stains are lime; they are rust.

Q. I take been watering my yard and not even caring about the well h2o hitting the siding on my garage and side of my business firm. I've read that perchance Lime Away for a form of citric acid or hydrochloric acid might piece of work. How would I utilize these solvents and is there something in a proper noun brand bachelor that might be easier on me?
thank you a lot in advance!

A. I have spent all week trying to get the rust off my vinyl siding and finally found the magic. It's chosen RustAid by WM Barr and Co..
Spray it on in a sprayer directly and the rust is gone in minutes. Then only hose it down. It took a Gallon to exercise 2 sides of the house. It comes in a maroon container. It is in with the heavy household cleaners. There is also ane for indoors that is in a quart bottle.I tried Clorox straight and CLR and Limeaway but it didn't budge the rust. This RustAid is awesome.

A. I purchased an expensive vinyl siding rust remover and a canteen of "CLR". Neither one worked....at all!
By chance I bought a canteen of "The Works" at the dollar general store because information technology said it will remove rust from toilets. What did I accept to lose? But $1.
I was pleasantly surprised. It removed the rust stains on vinyl siding virtually instantly. It is one/5th the toll of "lime-a-way" and "CLR" plus you can cut information technology to a 50/50 mixture with water and it yet works slap-up.
Apply to physical sidewalks and driveways at 100% concentration and it volition clean it to a like new finish.

thumbs up signI merely completed a power wash of my house with xanthous vinyl siding. The irrigation organization left rust stains on the siding from where the air current blows the mist onto the siding. The power washing didn't touch the stains. I tried "The Works" as recommended in this mail and it worked extremely well. Quickly, efficiently, and so rinsed to remove all the chemical which is [dilute] HCl. I did a 12 sq. ft surface area in most 1 ane/ii minutes...thanks John.

A. I too had rust stains on my vinyl siding from my irrigation system and nada seemed to work until I read this thread. I bought Works at our local Dollar General store ($1.50) and it really does work. I had to put information technology on full force merely after a minute or so I was able to wash it off and the rust came away. I followed up with a soap and water wash and final rinse. The product works for even severe rust stains on siding.

A. I use well water to water my lawn and am usually very careful not to let overspray hit the business firm, but one day the wind blew the h2o on the house and left backside a rust like color stain all over the side of the house. It was nearly probable difficult water stains or something of that nature. I panicked needless to say. I saw the posting of "the Works" from the Dollar General store (also available at the Dollar Tree) and thought what the heck, allow me give it a try. This stuff actually does works with a little attempt; I actually used "the works tile and tub cleaner" rather than "the Works toilet bowl cleaner" (I bet they both work). Cheers Mary Beth for your posting, I alive in Virginia Beach too, it must be something in the well h2o

thumbs up signThanks for the hint.

It worked peachy. It cleaned long time stains below my windowsill very quickly. I wore heavy condom gloves and practical the liquid to a scrubby to rub the stain. The cleaner ate through the scrubby in no time so be conscientious to use heavy duty safety gloves NOT hospital type sparse gloves. I and so hosed the expanse very carefully to remove all the cleaner. Very happy to recommend this product. Price $2.99 plus tax here in New York at the dollar store which is well worth it.

thumbs up signOMG!! I spent hours scubbing my siding with CLR after the sprinkler left rust stains all over it two years ago. I tried "The works" toilet basin cleaner and a sponge, amazing. Finished the whole surface area in nigh 20 minutes with no scrubbing. Just wiped information technology on and so hosed it off after a few minutes.

thumbs up signI have to concord with the earlier posts most "The Works". I also had rust stains on the vinyl siding of my house. I used several cleaners such as Lime-a-way, CLR, and Awesome. To no avail, they all didn't work. I used "The Works" and inside a few minutes, I allow it sit down and so I scrubbed and pressure washed off and the rust came off! This stuff is truly astonishing!

A. I had rust stains on my vinyl shed and had previously tried Rust-Aid, which did not work. So glad I kept reading these comments to discover "The Works". Wow, what results. I diluted information technology, wet the vinyl, and wiped information technology on with a sponge (rubber gloves a must) and rinsed it off. In no time the shed looked similar new. It was pretty bad before that. I then went on to the mailbox. I also had a spot on a window that had a picture from the sprinkler. Cipher I tried earlier got it off until "The Works". I splurged and got two! Thanks for a smashing product!

thumbs up signI took the suggestion of previous posters to use The Works toilet cleaner to remove rust from vinyl siding. I purchased the spray for bath and shower cleaning and the toilet cleaner. Notwithstanding they only had the thick version of toilet cleaner. I used the spray commencement and information technology was magic. I sprayed information technology on the siding and the rust just disappeared. Amazing. I likewise had a spot on the siding nether an outside light that was all spotted up from bugs and tree frogs who congregate at that place at night when the light is on. Again, I sprayed it on, scrubbed a bit with a castor, rinsed and those spots were gone too. Nice to discover something that works that does not toll and arm and a leg.

thumbs up signThe Works is amazing. My well irrigation system over-sprayed on my neighbor's brand new pool deck. I chosen our church maintenance dept. because I know they are constantly fighting iron stains. They named some of the other products in this string and said "skilful luck, they don't really work very well." Got a bottle of The Works toilet cleaner. The sprayer stopped working later a couple of minutes, just this stuff literally dissolves the atomic number 26 deposit on contact. Zero waiting. Amazing.

thumbs up signWOW........afterwards reading this blog, I went to the local $ General and purchased the Works.....Absolutely AMAZED with the results!!!
I purchased two unlike products one was the Toilet bowl cleaner and another same make in a green bottle made for vinyl siding. Green bottle start, was not so impressed and so I decided to throw a canteen of the toilet bowl cleaner downwardly. By the time I was completed with pouring the cleaner downwards the rust was GONE! I mean gone, SPARKLING Make clean! This was not a piffling rust stain either, years of accumulation of a rust run-off from my Ac unit.

DEFINITELY A MUST USE!, I went back to the store and bought a case to keep in the garage!

thumbsdownAfterward reading the responses I bought a bottle of 'The Works' in the dark-green bottle. I brushed it on full strength and waited near a minute before rinsing off and nil happened!
The stain is from the AC unit, if that makes a deviation. I'll attempt the spray next fourth dimension. Don't waste your coin ($1.thirty) on this one.

thumbs up signI was doubtful when I bought the works based on the recommendations here. I had a white vinyl fence with red stains from the well water irrigation arrangement. I had tried power washing and lime abroad. Would not go away. I applied The Works bath cleaner that I bought for $1.50 at Dollar Full general. NO balderdash, the stuff melted off immediately. I mean, I did not have time to scrub it. I merely was gone. Unbelievable stuff!!

thumbs up signI had a pro supercede the chimney cap on our home, did a great job! He said he could become the rust stains off the vinyl from the old cap, only his solution didn't work. Gave u.s.a. a $250 price to replace the stained vinyl, which was reasonable ... but I read the reviews for The Works -- guess what information technology works!

This stain was 20 yrs in the making; with some elbow grease, a steel wool pad for the grooves in the vinyl, and a Mr. Make clean magic eraser, the stain came off the chimney vinyl. $250 saved with a $ane bottle. Note, this wasn't the toilet bowl cleaner, it was a bottle of The Works rust/lime cleaner in a spray bottle. Best dollar ever spent!

How-do-you-do. As the editor, I've worked this page for 13 years without comment. Finally, our tenants ran the sprinkler system on a few very windy days, and rust stains started accumulating on the white siding because the sprinkler system uses a very shallow well with recirculated tan, iron-rich, water. So yes, that side of the house largely turned the color of coffee ice cream.

We used scrub brushes with both vinegar and The Works. Vinegar was slower and less effective than The Works, merely both worked to some degree. What we did find though, was that the caste of success depends a practiced deal on what it is that discolored. The white siding came clean quite a fleck better than the white plastic surrounds effectually the windows and the other trim. The thought of cleaning the rust colored staining does work in essentially reducing the staining, but certainly not 100%.

A. Hi,
We have a condo at the beach in Brigantine NJ. It sits right next to the back bay and near 1.5 blocks from the Atlantic Ocean
Our steel/concrete steps were poorly maintained, and with continuous contact with high body of water common salt environments, rust blazon stains have built up on the vinyl siding for decades.
I'm a trained pharmacist and took on the task of finding a suitable stain remover which did not negatively bear upon the vinyl siding. Tried all the common products from the hardware shop, with unacceptable results.
Came across The Works a couple years dorsum. Take had expert success with this production, simply found out that it takes some time for the reaction to deliquesce the iron complexes for ease of removal(upward to 30 minutes), plus sometimes a double or triple awarding for really stubborn stains.

Q. Two vinyl rust removers discussed on this site are: The Works and RustAid.

The Works is 9.v% hydrochloric acrid and 0.5% hydrofluoric acid .

[ed. note: We don't see hydrofluoric acid mentioned in that textile safety data sheet]

RustAid is <10% oxalic acrid and <0.five% hydrofluoric acid

(https://world wide web.homedepot.com/catalog/pdfImages/77/77fe4770-d8bd-4b77-a736-b0a3c1ecbb54.pdf).

Both seem to easily take rust stains off vinyl fences and siding, co-ordinate to comments on this site and my personal experience with RustAid.

I have diluted Rust Help with water in a ane:eight mix, and information technology all the same works well. (That makes information technology only 1.25% acrid.)

Fifty-fifty and then I worry about long term use damaging the vinyl surface. I chosen WM Barr, maker of RustAid, and could not become an answer almost long term effects.

A. Hullo John. Vinyl is very acid resistant. Vinyl lined vats are extensively used in plating shops for a wide diversity of acids. However, I learned from personal experience on my own firm that sometimes some stuff has been painted over the years to restore a white freshness, and the paint does not agree up well at all to acid-laden scrub brushes :-)

And so. for united states of america, information technology worked surprisingly well on most of the siding, but on some of the filler/trim pieces, which may accept been painted, it did not help and might even have hurt a flake.

If we haven't emphasized it enough nevertheless, spraying and brushing rather potent acrid around has its downsides. Make sure you lot are wearing vinyl gloves, goggles, a respirator and plenty article of clothing to go on whatever splatter off your skin.

thumbs up sign Ted

Glad you lot noticed my skid-up. The hydrofluoric acid is indeed merely shown in the RustAid cloth safety data canvas.

And thanks for the practical info on vinyl holding upwardly in plating shops. I forgot to mention that my concern is for my make new, cute vinyl fence. Would sure hate to see that finish degrade! It does seem that diluting Rust Aid one:8 in h2o, <ane.25% oxalic acid, should not be a problem. Heck, I could probably go to greater dilution, but I haven't tried it.

! This ongoing discussion was a tremendous assistance to me every bit I am faced with a huge amount of rust stain to remove from vinyl siding on a home, and metal siding on a store. The lesser line is this: Even though information technology'southward not like shooting fish in a barrel getting these products for a Canadian, I tried The Works Toilet Bowl Cleaner, The Works Limeosol, and even Bar Keeper'due south Friend More than. Out of those, The Works Limeosol worked the best (very well). However, then I tried Magica. Don't fifty-fifty bother with anything else. Magica worked fabulously. Merely get information technology and forget all the other stuff.

A. Readers, a wise responder on another thread wrote that life is likewise short to spend weeks researching how all-time to pigment a rock or a tiny birdhouse. So postings about ane proprietary product being improve than any of the hundreds of others may be overkill, and may encourage people with vested interests to pose as satisfied customers. Still, David's posting has reminded me that there might well be a personal condom advantage to products based on oxalic acrid and no hydrofluoric acid, like Magica, rather than the hydrochloric acrid in toilet basin cleaners.

I personally institute that The Works did work a bit better than undiluted vinegar on my siding, but I didn't try oxalic acid. pic of Ted Mooney

thumbs up sign So, like this mail service states; I had rust on my vinyl siding, tried everything I could call up of like elbow grease and CLR. To my surprise, I saw that people were using The Works Toilet Cleaner. Went to Dollar Tree where most picked it up, they didn't have any, but they did have The Works Tub and Shower. For a dollar I figured it's worth a shot.

Got dwelling house put it in a spray bottle being the rust started at the soffits and ran to the ground from a rusty smash in the gutter. Sprayed it downwards and let information technology sit for about ten minutes and lo and behold, IT WORKED! It may have taken a bit longer than the toilet cleaner from what I've read, but it still did the job and cheaply! And then glad to observe this post.
